TWO days of filming at a ‘closed set’ in Cleveland were built into the Narnia schedule in case of bad weather, but nobody imagined it would be a record-breaking dust storm that caused cast and crew to abandon ship.

A set was built inside a vacant Cleveland warehouse as part of the filming of third Narnia film, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, which has been based at Cleveland Point this month.

The cast began two days of filming on Tuesday in the warehouse, which fortuitously meant they filmed inside throughout Wednesday’s dusty and windy weather.

On Thursday, the cast returned for their final day of filming – after the ship had to be cleaned from mast to deck.

Work to dismantle the 125 tonne ship and reassemble it on set at MovieWorld on the Gold Coast began on Friday and is expected to take about two weeks.

Media spokesman Ernie Malik said while nothing would remain at Cleveland Point at this stage, he was hopeful some remnant of the filming might be returned to Redland City after the movie was complete.

“I’ll be curious to see what the council decides to do with the big cement base from the gimbal we used to manoeuvre the Dawn Treader and which we’re leaving behind,” he said.

“I think they’d make a killing if they built a carousel there, with a great view of the bay you could charge $1 a ride and make your money back!

“I have a couple of pieces from the set I’ll suggest to the producer that might be donated back to the city, but we’ll have to see what happens.”

Mr Malik said all of the film’s cast and crew wanted to thank Redlands residents for their interest and support.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is due for release in December 2010.

AS the dates draw nearer for the Narnia cameras to start rolling at Cleveland Point, production staff are warning residents who plan to drop in and witness the action that filming could be delayed by a few days.Shooting at Jumpinpin last week was delayed by a sandstorm, and any more unexpected weather events could potentially delay the start of Cleveland filming by a few days.

The Bayside Bulletin will have regular updates ? keep an eye on www.baysidebulletin.com.au for the latest changes.

The gold coin donation bucket has also been removed from the grandstand.

Although the bucket is unlikely to be reinstated, the proceeds of a few hundred dollars so far will still be distributed to local charities by Redland City Council.

FUN DAY

The council is also getting right into the Narnia spirit, hosting a Narnia Family Fun Day at Cleveland Library this Saturday, August 29, from 1pm to 3pm.

All your favourite characters from the Chronicles of Narnia books will be there, and guests are invited to dress up and have their photos taken with their favourite character, take part in the Narnia Quest, games and crafts.

Bookings are not essential, but phone 3829 8576 for more information, or visit www.redland.qld.gov.au and follow the library link from the home page.
